The VLAD-1000 Nailgun is the Berserker's Tier 2 weapon. It is a pneumatic nailgun with two firing modes: "shotgun", where it fires 7 nails per shot, or single-fire. It is the first ranged weapon available early on for the Berserker.

It has a magazine size of 42 nails, resulting in 6 total shots in shotgun mode. With a full supply of ammo, it can reload 8 times + its initial magazine.

As a part of the multi-perk weapon system, the VLAD-1000 Nailgun also belongs to the arsenal of the Support.

Description & Flavor Text

- "Choice of single or multiple nail fire modes. Alt-fire to toggle between fire modes."

- "We understand that one of the Horzine scientists borrowed the original nailgun from a (dead) maintenance man."

Technical Information

Damage:

  • Damage per pellet = 35.
  • Pellets amount (shotgun mode) = 7 (245 total).
  • Buttstock bash = 26.

Damage Type = Ballistic.

Damage Type Group = Shotgun.

Projectile speed:

  • 175 m/s, bounces off of the surface 2 times.

Spread factor = 0.16 (shotgun), 0.02 (single-fire).

Rate of Fire:

  • Shotgun mode = 200.
  • Single-fire = 300.
  • Bash = 50

Reload Time:

  • Tactical Reload:
    • Normal = 2.61s.
    • Elite = 1.93s.
  • Dry Reload:
    • Normal = 2.75s.
    • Elite = 2.02s.

Equip Time = 0.36s, Putdown Time = 0.46s.

Weapon Powers:

Upgrades

  • Upgrade 1 (600): Base damage x1.2 (42 per pellet, 294 total), Base weight + 1 (6 total).
  • Upgrade 2 (700): Base damage x1.3 (45 per pellet, 315 total), Base weight + 2 (7 total).
  • Upgrade 3 (1500): Base damage x1.4 (49 per pellet, 343 total), Base weight + 3 (8 total).

Notes

  • Player's stance has no effect on the pellet spread.
  • Very odd, almost horizontal pellet spread in shotgun mode.
  • Amount of recoil depends on player stance and movement. Crouching and aiming down sights gives the lowest possible amount of the recoil.
  • Costs 2800 Dosh to fully upgrade.
  • Costs 351 Dosh to fully replenish ammo from 0 bullets.

Skill Synergies

  • The Berserker's level 10 skill Vampire works with the VLAD; use this to safely heal from a distance.
  • The Berserker's level 20 skill Smash applies its extra headshot damage and stumble power onto the VLAD.
  • The Support's level 5 skill High Capacity Magazines increases its magazine size from 42 to 63 (6 shots to 9 shots), giving it some extra sustained fire.
  • The Support's level 5 skill Tactical Reload mitigates its very long reload, allowing it to get back into the fight faster.
  • The Support's level 15 skill Tight Choke gives the VLAD a more conventional, circular spread.

Strategy

The VLAD-1000, despite its low tier and seemingly lackluster stats, is a very powerful weapon, and a must-have in any Berserker's kit, especially early on.

In single-fire mode, the VLAD can be used as a somewhat accurate head-popper, allowing a Berserker to pick off Bloats standing behind crowds of ZEDs, or even Sirens and Husks, with some patience and kiting. It is also able to kill Crawlers in one nail shot, as well as reliably decapitating Stalkers, Gorefasts, and any Clot variant.

The VLAD, on any perk, has roughly the same burst potential as an M4 Combat Shotgun in the hands of a level 25 Support, at almost half the price and 2 less weight. However, its inaccuracy and long reload may make ideal conditions for this to happen few and far in-between.

Nails fired from the VLAD have incredible penetration power, even better than shotguns used as an off-perk weapon. This allows Berserkers to quickly and safely clear crowds of weak enemies, freeing them up to deal with bigger threats.

The VLAD, being an improvised weapon, has very low accuracy and extremely awkward iron sights. This is especially true in "shotgun mode", where the VLAD has a spread comparable to the Double-Barrel Shotgun. It is also odd and inconsistent, often sending out a lopsided blob as opposed to an circular distribution of pellets

The VLAD's nails will bounce off of surfaces, making hallways and small rooms deathtraps for ZEDs. If fired at a group of Crawlers in a small enough area, it can potentially clear out several in one shot because of its tendencies to bounce around randomly.

Wildly firing the VLAD in "shotgun" mode will quickly deplete your magazine, resulting in a very long reload. Unlike with tube-fed shotguns, this cannot be done incrementally, which means you will be left defenseless for a significant amount of time, compounded further by its long reload. Because of this, the VLAD's sustained DPS suffers greatly if used recklessly.

Supports may find the VLAD a useful addition to their arsenal due to its magazine-fed semi-auto action, high penetration power, and bouncing nails.

With the Support's level 5 skill Tactical Reload, the long reload of the VLAD is significantly cut down; it reloads even faster than the HZ12 Multi-Action, the Support's Tier 2 proper magazine-fed shotgun, in exchange for half of its magazine size.

The VLAD, including its single-fire mode, also gains any and all perk bonuses of the Support thanks to multi-perk weapon system.
